I am really concerned about our welfare system. It is there to give people a hand (see my first healthcare post). No one in this country who is truly needy can't get benefits. But, that really isn't the problem or the issue at all.
The problem is the misuse and abuse of the programs. And, the problem is in the heart of the people who use and abuse the programs.
Here is an example. Over the weekend, a mistake was made on EBT cards in some states. Some of the cards had unlimited spending amounts. So, people took everything that they could grab off the shelves in Wal-Mart. They literally cleared the shelves like it was Black Friday and got everything that they could.
Hmmm. I don't think that the problem is the program. The problem here originates in the heart.
If I was on government assistance, I wouldn't take the extra stuff even if the card had unlimited funds. I would get what I need, that's it.
What would you do?
Would you steal the extra stuff? It is stealing, taking stuff that doesn't belong to you.
On the other end of the spectrum, some cards didn't have any money on them at all. People walked into Wal-Mart, took what they needed (or wanted) and didn't pay at all. Managers had to close the store.
Evil comes out of our hearts, from the desire to want something else more than we want God. We need to fill up our God-shaped void with, well, God.
